Netflix has been adding a lot of Romance films to their library recently, but why romance? Romance movies take you into someone else’s life. The storylines captivate you and bring you into another world. The couples are usually quirky and relatable. You can relate to the intimate feeling between the characters as the viewer. Romantic movies play a huge role in young adult lives because it makes you “Believe in Love.”
Junior Emma Taylor said, “When I watch romantic movies it makes me wish that it was me, I wish that I was in them playing the character.” We laugh and we cry in them, but in the end we watch them again and again because they make us feel something. Netflix has released a few in particular recently that you will want to watch over and over again.
First up, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (TATBILB), a Netflix’s Original rated TV-14. Starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo. The storyline starts off with Condor, playing Lara Jean Covey. In the movie she plays a shy, imaginative 16-year-old girl. She writes five letters to all the boys that she has crushed on so hard she does not know what to do. The letters mysteriously get out and the boys come knocking. Peter Kavinsky played by Centineo is the main supporting role in the film, he receives his letter that Covey wrote.
The storyline explores Covey and Kavinsky’s relationship and the trials and tribulations Covey needs to go through to open up to Kavinsky and others. Teens can relate to this movie because they understand it is hard to put themselves out there. Lara Jean soon learns that not everything in her life has to be a fantasy and that when getting to know someone and putting yourself out there can change your whole view on their personality and your outlook on life.
Similar to, TATBILB, is The Kissing Booth, also rated TV-14. Starring Joey King, Jacob Elordi, and Joel Courtney. King plays Elle Evans best friend to Courtney’s character, Lee Flynn. The two high school students have been best friends for their whole lives due to the fact their mothers were inseparable as well. Noah Flynn played by Elordi, is Lee Flynn’s older and more popular brother. Lee Flynn grew up protecting Noah and Evans his whole life because he see Evans as his sibling as well. Evans sees Noah as more than her best friend’s protective older brother and has secretly crushed on him. Now neither brother knows because if Lee finds out it is not good for either side. Evans soon has to organize a kissing booth for a school carnival and comes face-to-face with her long term crush.
The movie plays out in a comedic sense and captures the viewers attention by how the characters can relate to the audience. Junior Liberty Lucero said, “I loved the movie but the end was cut too short. I wanted more, I wanted to see their life together, but it just ended.” The film is light-hearted and shows the opportunity high school plays in a relationship although the ending does leave you hanging. I believe that the show is amazing and worth watching, yes it can be very cheesy, but the characters and the storyline are relatable and fun to watch over and over again.
Another movie that has recently come onto Netflix is Sierra Burgess is a Loser. Sierra Burgess played by Shannon Purser plays a confident girl trying to graduate high school. Her enemy in the show Veronica, played by Kristine Froseth, gives Burgess’s number out to a boy named Jamey who is also played by Noah Centineo. The boy mistakenly thinks Burgess is Veronica and starts texting her. A case of mistaken identity leads to an unlikely alliance between two enemies to win the heart of Jamey. Taylor also said, “The show was a little awkward and cheesy, but I loved it and it makes me want a boyfriend.” The show plays a big role in catfishing and teens not being able to show their true selves to their peers.
Netflix has many options for a wide variety of people. For example, Spf 18 a movie that was released in 2017 and plays on a romantic and comedic feel. As well as, Alex Strangelove a movie for LGBTQ youth and plays on identity, with mentions of comedic lightness. So, as you can tell Netflix is the place to watch originals and light hearted rom-coms. Netflixs also releases non- Netflix originals and older rom-coms like How to Lose a Guy in 10 days and a more serious movies like 6 Years. Netflix is the place to go to watch all kinds of movies and T.V shows, but they play pretty well in the romantic department.
