Twenty-five year old Sasha Sloan has stolen many hearts with her new album “Only Child.” She’s coming to claim her spot in Los Angeles and she’s ready to make a name for herself. She is originally from Boston, Massachusetts. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue a singing career at 19. With this bold move came her job at a coffee shop where she made all her money to support herself. Little did she know she’d be making plenty of money to support herself soon enough.
This album really comes for your heart with the relatable lyrics and instrumentals that’ll make you feel something. She killed it in every aspect of artistry. Every lyric in this song is her pure, honest, icy truth, she did not hold back. One of her most eye-catching lyrics was in her song “Is it just me?” She said “I hate holding babies/ And people tryna save me/ Think religion is a business/ Where you pay for God’s forgiveness.” Sloan said exactly what she meant; she is not afraid of other’s opinions. Her maturity and honesty is what makes this album so beautiful.
I think this album is a big hit or miss just because she really held strong to her style. If you don’t like her style, this is not for you. If you like her style, this is your new favorite album. Sophomore Krista Inwood said, “I see a pattern with all Sasha Sloan’s music. She writes her songs with a really deep meaning behind it that relates to the world.” I couldn’t agree more. Sasha Sloan has a way of hiding beautiful deep meanings in all of her music. Her song “Lie” tells the sad truth about how our generation doesn’t feel loved in or out of a relationship so they turn to social media to receive that love.
Sophomore Elle Nielson said “I found the song ‘House with No Mirrors’ very interesting to think about because what would we do if we had no mirrors and we couldn’t compare ourselves to others.” Sloan’s song had a way of connecting with the younger generation. She could relate to almost everything we are going through because she is older now. She wrote the song as though she was looking back at her younger age and seeing how much she’s grown. In her song “High School Me” she teaches a lesson to younger kids: the cool kids aren’t everything. High school is hard, but you grow from it and later realize the things you thought were important, aren’t important anymore.
A big song in this album is “Until it Happens to You.” This song is very important in the album because 2020 has really been a rough year for a lot of people. This song is about not understanding the loss of a loved one until it happens to you. A lot of people haven’t felt the pain of loss from COVID-19 yet, so they’re not very understanding towards others.
The title song of the album “Only Child” is also very relevant to the times right now. This song talks about how lonely it is to be an only child. With quarantine and self isolation I can’t even imagine how lonely it would be as an only child and this song helps you understand and see how they’re feeling right now.
Like I said before, this album is very mature for her and focuses a lot on growth. I think Sloan went very into depth with her feelings in this album. Some people might dislike this album because her songs are very sad, deep, and real. Sophomore Jerzi Dixon said, “Her songs kind of talk about how the world isn’t as great as we thought it was when we were kids.” Sloan’s music is also very repetitive and that is annoying for some people. I found the song “Lie” kind of hard to listen to after about the third time because it was so repetitive. I wish the album had more of a variety in the lyrics.
Overall, I think this album was amazing. I think this album was stylized very beautifully. The songs are very relatable and very likable. These songs are very eye catching for high school and junior high students because of the lyrics. I really enjoyed almost all the songs on the album and I think Sloan did a fantastic job.
